11. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE? THE HEAD OR THE TAIL?
Definitions
are taken from Webster's Dictionary.
Obedience:
doing what is ordered; submission. Obey: to carry out the
instructions or orders of. submit to the control of.
Prerequisite:
necessary condition to something following.
Remember
when you are studying these lessons to read the scriptures
surrounding the text printed here if you do not understand
something. Because of limited space, we cannot record them
all.
1. KNOW
GOD'S VOICE
In order
to be able to obey God's voice, you've got to be able to hear
it. In order to know God's voice you must have an experience
of salvation with forgiveness of your sins through Jesus Christ.
In Exodus 5:2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the Lord, that I should
obey his voice. . . .?" Then he said, ". . . I know not the
Lord. . . ." Read John 10:14.
He openeth
also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return
from iniquity. Job 36:10.
The Lord
GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither
turned away back. Isaiah 50:5.
The Lord's
sheep follow him because they know and hear his voice. He
calls his own sheep by name and leads them (John 10:1-5).
Read John 10:27. We must be able to hear. Read Jeremiah 17:23
(inclined their ear) (Inclined means willing). When we are
born again we are ABLE to hear God's voice. If we are WILLING
to hear his voice, then we can be OBEDIENT to God.
Hearing
his voice: God can speak audibly, by his Word, by the Holy
Ghost, and any way he wants to. Read 1 Kings 19:12, and these
scriptures on conscience: John 8:9, Acts 23:1, Romans 2:15,
Romans 9:1, 2 Corinthians 1:12, 1 Timothy 1:5, 1 Timothy 1:19,
1 Timothy 4:2, Titus 1:15, Hebrews 9:14, Hebrews 13:18, 1
Peter 2:19, 1 Peter 3:16, 1 Peter 3:21, John 5:25.
You are
not supposed to obey every one that claims to be of God (1
John 4:1). Read Galatians 1:6-9 about accepting another gospel
(a perverted gospel).
But they
refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped
their ears, that they should not hear. Zechariah 7:11.
When you
believe you have heard from God, see if what you heard is
according to the WORD of GOD. If it is from God, it will line
up. Read Romans 12:1-2 about proof of the will of God. Read
1 John 3:18-23 and Isaiah 50:7. When you know you've heard
God's voice, DO what he says.
REMEMBER:
I CAIN'T NEVER DID NOTHIN'! God has made us able to hear his
voice. If we are willing to hear it, we can obey him. All
have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We have ALL
made mistakes. We need to quit being carnal (which is enmity
with God-Romans 8:7), and start walking in the Spirit, yielding
to God fully (Galatians 5:16). The Lord has made a way for
us to know the will of God. We are responsible to find the
will of God and to obey it. If we do not, we will be punished.
But strong
meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who
by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both
good and evil. Hebrews 5:14.
(47)
And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared
not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten
with many stripes. (48) But he that knew not, and did commit
things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes.
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required:
and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask
the more. Luke 12:47-48.
And he
answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are
these which hear the word of God, and do it. Luke 8:21.
I can
of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment
is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of
the Father which hath sent me. John 5:30.
Read
Matthew 7:24-26 and Luke 6:46-49. You need to HEAR and you
need to DO what God says to do. Then God will hear you.
Now we
know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper
of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. John 9:31.
You must
believe God does not change and he means what he says (Malachi
3:6 and Hebrews 13:8). You have to determine in your heart
that by God's help and grace, you will obey God, and receive
the end of your faith, eternal life.
Jesus
came to do the will of God, not his own will! (John 4:34 &
John 6:38.) If you keep his commandments, you will abide in
God's love. Jesus became obedient unto the death of the cross
(John 15:10 & Philippians 2:8). We must also die to flesh,
being obedient to the death of the cross - daily (Luke 9:23).
The disciples were persecuted for preaching the gospel of
Christ Jesus. They obeyed God anyway and ceased not (Acts
5:42).
2. REWARD
FOR OBEDIENCE
There
are great promises to the obedient believers in Christ Jesus.
1. Salvation (Hebrews 5:9).
2. The power of the Holy Ghost (Acts 5:32).
3. Sanctification (1 Peter 1:22).
4. Grace and apostleship. Romans 1:5 & Revelations 1:6.
5. You will be a peculiar treasure to God. Exodus 19:5.
Rewards:
Malachi 3:16, Hebrews 6:10, 1 Corinthians 9:16-17, Matthew
25:21, & Romans 11:29.
(6) Who
will render to every man according to his deeds: (7) To them
who by patient continuance in well-doing seek for glory and
honour and immortality, eternal life: (8) But unto them that
are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
indignation and wrath, (9) Tribulation and anguish, upon every
soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of
the Gentile; (10) But glory, honour, and peace, to every man
that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
(11) For there is no respect of persons with God. Romans 2:6-11.
Knowing
that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance:
for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:24.
But if
thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak;
then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary
unto thine adversaries. Exodus 23:22.
Read
Ezekiel 33 and Isaiah 1:19-20. Though we are promised many
blessings as obedient believers in Christ Jesus, we are promised
cursing for disobedience.
(28)
Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.
(29) And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is
no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife,
or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, (30) Who shall
not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the
world to come life everlasting. Luke 18:28-30.
3. DISOBEDIENCE
TO GOD IS SIN
Disobedience
to God is sin. His laws are written down in his Word. If we
sin we must ask forgiveness and forsake that sin to remain
a disciple true to Christ (1 John 1:8-10 & 2:1-5).
He that
covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth
and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Proverbs 28:13.
For further
study: John 8:11, 1 John 3:18-24, Leviticus 5:5-19 (17-19
sin through ignorance), Romans 5:12-21, 1 John 2:1-5, Proverbs
30:12. There are many more. Read what Job did for his children
in Job 1:5.
Many
times in Psalms it is written that His mercy endureth forever.
We can overcome the world by our faith and obedience to God.
Read 1 John 5:1-4. Remember faith and works go together. Read
Hebrews 12:1-17.
"The
devil made me do it" or "So and So made me do it" is not true.
Look at Proverbs 1:10, "My son, if sinners entice thee, consent
thou not." Some people directly disobey God's commands. Some
say they don't understand the Bible, or say they don't know
God's will. (2 Timothy 2:15) Study the word. There is no excuse.
Romans 12:1-2 says to prove the will of God. Some have trouble
making decisions about right and wrong. The word is clear
about the ten commandments and if you have the Holy Ghost,
he will GUIDE you. Cleanse yourself of double mindedness (James
4:8). Read Hebrews 10:35-39. In 1 Kings 21:20-25 Ahab sold
himself to do evil. Verse 25 says "whom Jezebel his wife stirred
up." Read Proverbs 1:7-19. You can't blame someone else for
you sin, no matter what.
(8) He
that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth
from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested,
that he might destroy the works of the devil. (9) Whosoever
is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth
in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (10)
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children
of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of
God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 1 John 3:8-10.
Jesus
answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth
sin is the servant of sin. John 8:34.
There
is no other way to God but through Jesus Christ. In John 14:6
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man
cometh unto the Father, but by me." God has given us the written
Word of God and the Living Word of God
(Jesus)
(John 1:1). Those who try to get to God without obeying the
word of God are considered thieves and robbers (John 10:1).
Read Romans 10:3.
4. REWARD
FOR DISOBEDIENCE
Disobedience
to God brings chastisement. Remember Numbers 23:19. God does
not lie. Read Hebrews 12:1-13. We should be in subjection
to the Father of spirits and gain life eternal (Hebrews 12:9-11).
The Bible
says that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Praise
God the way of escape is made by forgiveness of sins through
repentance (Mark 16:16).
5. REBELLION
The development
and maturity of our Christian life depends on our determination
to obey God. If we continually disobey God, giving in to our
own will, we will give in to a spirit of rebellion, unless
we repent.
But they
obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck
stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
Jeremiah 17:23.
(7) And
to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus
shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, (8)
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God,
and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 Thessalonians
1:7-8.
Wherein
in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit
that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Ephesians
2:2.
Let no
man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things
cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Ephesians 5:6.
(2) For
if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression
and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; (3)
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which
at the
first
began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us
by them that heard him; Hebrews 2:2-3.
Read
Jeremiah 11:3-4, 1 Samuel 12:15, Job 36:11-12, Jeremiah 7:23-24,
Jeremiah 12:17, Jeremiah 18:1-10, Jeremiah 26:13, Romans 2:11-13,
2 Peter 2:1-22. Read Deuteronomy 28 about the cursings and
the blessings, Deuteronomy 11:26-28, and Joshua 24:15.
(22)
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings
and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold,
to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the
fat of rams. (23) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft,
and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou
hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected
thee from being king. 1 Samuel 15:22-23.
Samuel
spoke these words to disobedient King Saul. If we are stubborn
and disobey God, He will reject us from being kings and priests
unto him. Read Revelation 1:5 & 6.
And refused
to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst
among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion
appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art
a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger,
and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. Nehemiah 9:17.
6. OBEDIENCE
TO GOD'S LEADERS
We must
obey God sent leaders. Read Ephesians 4:11-13, Titus 3:1,
and Acts 7:35-39.
Obey
them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for
they watch for your souls, as they that must give account,
that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that
is profitable for you. Hebrews 13:17. Read 2 Thessalonians
3:14.
7. OBEY
PARENTS
Luke
2:51 tells us that Jesus was subject unto his Mother and Joseph
at age 12, even though he told them in verse 49 that he must
be about his Father's business. Read Proverbs 22:6 & Colossians
3:20. Remember in Exodus 20:12 the commandment to honour your
father and mother. We are also told to obey our parents in
the Lord. These are those who have helped you to get saved
and have taught the right way of the Lord. Read 1 Corinthians
4:15-16 and Ephesians 6:1.
8. OBEY
GOD ANYWAY
If you
are a Christian, obedience to God and his Word are required,
even if it isn't what you want to hear and do! Obey God that
it may be well with you (Jeremiah 42:5-7).
If ye
keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I
have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
John 15:10.
God's
commandments are not grievous (1 John 5:2-3), but when our
fleshly desires are not submitted to God, misery is the result.
If we believe God and obey him we will have peace (Romans
5:1). Therefore we must learn to submit to God first (James
4:7). We must put on the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5 &
1 Peter 4:1). We must obey the TRUTH, (Galatians 3:1 & Galatians
5:6-8).
For they
being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to
establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves
unto the righteousness of God. Romans 10:3.
And he
said unto them, full well ye reject the commandment of God,
that ye may keep your own tradition. Mark 7:9.
9. YOUR
OBEDIENCE AND/OR DISOBEDIENCE WILL AFFECT OTHERS.
Adam's
sin still affects us today. Let us be careful not to sin and
offend (2 Corinthians 6:3). We are to be examples of the believers
(1 Timothy 4:12)! Abraham's obedience blessed many (Genesis
22:18). Romans 14:7 says, "For none of us liveth to himself,
and no man dieth to himself."
For as
by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the
obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Romans 5:19.
10. QUALIFICATIONS
FOR MINISTRY: you must be able, willing and obedient. It may
sound simple, but much is required. Remember, all are called
to be witnesses of the Lord Jesus Christ when you get saved.
Read Deuteronomy 10:12. Our ability comes from God (1 Peter
4:11). Ability means the power to do something. Qualified
means having met the conditions or requirements, prepared,
trained, etc. If we learn to be obedient, in God's time we
will have met the conditions, being prepared and trained.
Read Ephesians Chapter 6, especially Verse 15. Read Ephesians
3:7.
You must
be saved. To be effective, you must have the Holy Ghost. You
must seek God consistently with prayer, fasting, and reading
the word. You must be obedient to God. You must follow Jesus
in everything, including dying to the flesh. Read Joel 1:13-15.
If you are called by God to ministry, you should seek and
receive the promises he has for you (remember the goods he
left for us (Matthew 25:14). It is for as many as the Lord
our God shall call (Acts 2:38-39).
But in
all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in
much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
(5) In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours,
in watchings, in fastings; (6) By pureness, by knowledge,
by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love
unfeigned, (7) By the word of truth, by the power of God,
by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the
left, (8) By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good
report: as deceivers, and yet true; (9) As unknown, and yet
well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as chastened, and
not killed; (10) As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor,
yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing
all things. 2 Corinthians 6:4-10. Read Matthew 23:23 & Luke
11:42.
Study
to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth
not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy
2:15.
(11)
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared
to all men, (12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and
worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly,
in this present world; Titus 2:11-12. Read Verses 13-15 also.
(4) And
my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of
man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
(5) That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men,
but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.
Man has
his own list of the qualifications he thinks a man or woman
of God should have. We don't seek to please men (1 Thessalonians
2:4) but to please the one that called us (2 Timothy 1:9):
the Lord Jesus Christ.
11. WHAT
DO YOU WANT TO BE? THE HEAD OR THE TAIL? You can be the head
if you obey God.
And the
LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou
shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that
thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which
I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: Deuteronomy
28:13. Read Deuteronomy 28:15 and 43-44.
There
is a satisfaction from knowing you are doing right before
God, but that is different from pride, which has no place
in a true child of God. There is honor that comes from God
when you have done right (John 12:26). We live far below our
privileges and power in Christ. Read Philippians 3:1-15. Press
toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in
Christ Jesus.
So likewise
ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded
you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that
which was our duty to do. Luke 17:10.
You have
got to be born again. You've got to SEEK God and have the
fear of God, faith in God, and knowledge of the Word of God.
You have to SEEK God so you will be able to know his voice
and his will. Then you can commit to a God that you know will
not fail, and you won't be ashamed to trust and OBEY him.
Sometimes we walk by faith, seeking the will of God as we
go and sometimes, we MUST know the will of God before taking
another step, to avoid hurt or destruction. Obedience to God
is required for us to obtain eternal life. Memorize: Romans
6:23.
