11. GOD RAISED PEOPLE FROM THE DEAD IN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS

Definitions are taken from Webster's Dictionary.

Resurrection is the act of rising again after death. Resurrect means to bring back to life, to rise from the dead. The Resurrection is the rising of Christ from the dead or refers to the rising of all the dead at the Last Judgment.

God has appointed all men to physical death, but God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation (Hebrews 9:27 & 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11). We can choose eternal life or we can choose eternal death by rejecting God (Deuteronomy 30:15 & 19). We know that physically and spiritually speaking, death comes before resurrection.

1. JESUS IS THE RESURRECTION

For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:21.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 11:25.

And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: Romans 1:4.

(37) All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. (40) And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. (44) No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:37, 40, & 44.

For further study: 1 John 5:11-12, 1 John 5:20, John 3:36, John 5:24, John 4:14, John 6:27-33, John 6:51-53, John 20:31, Hebrews 7:1-3, John 17:2-3, John 11:26.

2. CHRIST'S DEATH & RESURRECTION

Read: CHRIST'S ARREST, CRUCIFIXION, AND RESURRECTION: Matthew Chapters 26, 27 & 28. CHRIST'S RESURRECTION: Mark Chapter 16, John Chapter 20 & 21, and Luke Chapter 24.

There is proof of Christ's resurrection. The Messiah's death was prophesied in Isaiah 53. Psalms 16:10 says, ". . . neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." Many references are given in the word as to Christ's death and resurrection. There were many eye witnesses who saw him after he came back to life. An angel at the tomb gave witness to his resurrection.

To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: Acts 1:3.

Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-8, Acts 2:29-32, Luke 24:34, Luke 1:69, Acts 5:30, Acts 10:40, John 2 1:14, Acts 17:3, Matthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:6, John 2:22, Mark 16:9, Mark 16:14, Acts 2:32.

And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. Acts 3:15.

Jesus was one witness that he was going to die and be resurrected (Luke 9:22, Luke 18:33, Matthew 26:32, Mark 14:28, Matthew 17:22-23).

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matthew 16:21.

The devil started a lie, trying to keep people from believing in the resurrection (Matthew 27:50-66 and Matthew 28:1-15-20).

(12) And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, (13) Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. (14) And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. (15) So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. Matthew 28:12-15.

3. DEATH BEFORE RESURRECTION

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Hebrews 9:27.

Nobody wants to die. When the natural body dies, the soul lives on (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Life is precious to us, but we must die to our self will and accept Christ's forgiveness for our sins and continue to submit to Him to obtain eternal life. If we will not love this world, but lay our lives down for Christ, we shall obtain eternal life (1 John 2:15-17 & Romans 6:16-23). We must hate sin and overcome the flesh. Then when we die, we can be resurrected to life eternal.

Jesus went through crucifixion and died. It would not have profited him nor us for him to die if he had not resurrected. He conquered death. He is the first begotten from the dead (Revelation 1:5). He paid the price for our reconciliation and eternal life (2 Timothy 1:9-10).

Read 1 Corinthians 15:44-45 and Galatians 3:22. All are concluded under sin. Read Romans Chapters 4 & 5. Romans 5:12 explains how by one man sin entered into the world. Romans 5:18-21 lets us know that grace reigns through righteousness unto eternal life by Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus ever liveth to make intercession for us. He is able to save to the uttermost those who believe God has raised him from the dead (Hebrews 7:24-25).

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Revelation 1:18.

Christ died unto sin once. We die unto sin once—when we get saved. That is NOT saying that once you are saved you are always saved; you can backslide. We are supposed to quit sinning after we get saved, and we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ if we slip (1 John 2:1-2). We are to overcome the devil, growing in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Don't let sin reign in your mortal body (your flesh); don't serve sin. Read Revelation 2:7 and Revelation 21:6 about the Lord's great promises to the OVERCOMERS! If we do not overcome, we will not be resurrected to eternal life.

(6) Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (7) For he that is dead is freed from sin. (8) Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: (9) Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. (10) For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. (11) Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. (13) Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (14) For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Romans 6:6-14

(26) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, (27) But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. (28) He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: (29) Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Hebrews 10:26-29. Memorize these three scriptures.

Read 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 and John 12:24-25. We must die to sin. .

(9) But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: 1 Corinthians 1:9.

4. DYING, BEHOLD WE LIVE

For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. 1 Corinthians 4:9.

Jesus said in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." Solomon 8:6 says, ". . . love is strong as death." If we truly love God we are to die to flesh, keeping all the commandments of God's Word, until we die physically. Read Job 27:5 and Romans 12:1-3

Some think they are ready to die for Jesus' sake. God will prove where you truly stand with him spiritually. Seek God to be strong because Matthew 26:41 teaches us that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Read Matthew 26:35, Mark 14:31, and Luke 22:31-34. When Peter overcame the flesh and also received the power of the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:8), then he was able to overcome fear of death and boldly lived for Jesus. Read Acts 21:13 about Paul who said he was ready to die for Jesus. Paul also said he died daily (1 Corinthians 15:31). Read in 2 Corinthians 11:23 where Paul said he was in deaths oft.

(20) According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. (21) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (22) But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. (23) For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Philippians 1:20-23. (Paul said this.)

(10) Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. (11) For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 2 Corinthians 4:10-11. (Paul said this.)

As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; 2 Corinthians 6:9. Read 2 Corinthians 6:1-10, 2 Corinthians Chapter 5, & Galatians 2:20.

(8) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (9) Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. (10) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 2 Corinthians 5:8-10.

5. SOME WILL GIVE UP EVERYTHING TO KEEP THIS LIFE

James 4:14 tells us our life is a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Esau rejected his birthright because he thought he was going to die physically from lack of food, thinking that then his birthright would do him no good. As children of God, we must love, obey, and serve God, even if it means physical death. We surely must put flesh to death spiritually speaking (Romans 8:12-14) in order to keep eternal life abiding in us. Malachi 1:2-3 and Romans 9:13 tells us that God hated Esau. He rejected God's promises in exchange for food for his flesh.

And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? Gen 25:32.

(14) Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: (15) Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; (16) Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. (17) For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. Hebrews 12:14-17.

Read Matthew 16:26, Mark 8:34-37, and Luke 14:26.

6. SOME WANT TO DIE/BUT NOT TO FLESH

Some want to die physically as a way of escape, to keep from dying to flesh spiritually. Some get to a point where they think they are not ABLE to continue. They think they will just DIE before ________. You fill in that blank. Keep walking. We must fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12) and we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22). We are to die to the flesh daily (1 Corinthians 15:31). Read Judges 15:18-19, 1 Kings 17:12-16, 1 Kings 19:4-8, Jonah 4:3-11, Job chapter 3, Job 7:15, Exodus 16:3.

7. THE STING OF DEATH IS SIN

(56) The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:56-57.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. Romans 7:7.

(23) Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: (24) Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. (27) Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:23-24 & 27.

God raised Jesus from the dead and loosed the PAINS OF DEATH. There was no STING of death for Jesus because the sting of death is sin. He lived a sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus said the devil did not have any hold on him (John 14:30). Jesus had already been tempted and overcame by praying through to victory. Read Matthew 4:1-11, Matthew 26:35-46, and Mark 14:32-42. There was no sin in him. Being spotless, he died and made atonement for our sins, being the supreme sacrifice for our sins, a lamb without blemish (1 Peter 1:17-21). In the Old Testament, instead of killing Adam and Eve, God made an animal substitute take the punishment for sin, which is death. Remember, the wages of sin is death; Jesus paid for our sins (1 Corinthians 6:20). Jesus was resurrected the third day, after he died in obedience to God. He has the keys of hell and of death (Revelation 1:18).

Read Ezekiel 18:31-32, Ezekiel 33:11, Mark 8:36, & Matthew 16:26.

8. JESUS DIED SO WE MAY HAVE LIFE

God loves us but we must believe the gospel message of salvation through Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10, John 3:15-21, Luke 9:23, Matthew 20:28, and Hebrews 12:1-8.

(10) He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (11) And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 1 John 5:10-11.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. John 10:28.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 1 Peter 3:18.

And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. 1 Thessalonians 1:10.

Some results of Christ's resurrection: The Holy Ghost was sent (John 16:7). Christ is at the right hand of God making intercession for us (Mark 16:19, Romans 8:34, & Hebrews 7:25). We can do God's work in Jesus' name (Mark 13:34, John 16:24, Acts 4:10, & John 14:13). Live holy before God and it will come to pass.

Read John 1:4, John 4:14, Acts 3:26, John 1:12, John 6:51, John 17:2, Revelation 2:7, 2 Corinthians 4:14, and Revelation 21:6.

9. JESUS IS THE FIRST BEGOTTEN OF THE DEAD

If the Spirit of God dwells in us, God will restore life to our mortal bodies, raising us to eternal life after physical death (1 Peter 1:21). Read Romans 4:21-25.

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Romans 8:11.

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood. Revelation 1:5.

10. WHY CHRIST HAD TO DIE AND BE RESURRECTED

(17) That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: (18) The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, (19) And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, (20) Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, (21) Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: (22) And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, (23) Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Ephesians 1:17-23.

God wants us to understand the hope and the inheritance we have in Jesus. He wants the believers to know the greatness of the power he showed when he raised Jesus from the dead and put all things under his feet! Wrought means worked. Read Romans 5:18-21, Titus 2:13-14, Galatians 3:19, 1 Timothy 2:4-6, Hebrews 8:6, Hebrews 9:14-17, and Ephesians 1:23.

11. GOD RAISED THE DEAD in the Old and the New Testaments.

Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? Acts 26:8.

The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 1 Samuel 2:6.

(37) Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. (38) For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. Luke 20:37-38.

God raised Jesus from the dead. He gave Jesus power to raise the dead. Jesus gave us power to raise the dead (Matthew 10:8). Read John 5:26.

Examples of Jesus raising the dead: Jesus raised a young man (Luke 7:12-15). Jesus raised Lazarus (John 11:1-45 & John 12:1, 9, & 17). Jesus raised the ruler's daughter (Matthew 9:18-26). Peter raised Dorcas (Tabitha) Acts 9:36-42. Jesus said in John 14, "If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." Other examples: Hebrews 11:17-19 &35, 1 Kings 17:17-24, 2 Kings 13:20-21, 2 Kings 4:32-37, Matthew 11:5, Luke 7:12-16, Luke 7:22, Luke 8:49-55, John 12:1-17, Acts 9:36-42, Acts 20:7-12.
