GOD'S PLAN TO SAVE US

1. ADAM SINNED

Read all of Genesis Chapter 3 and 4. Adam and Eve disobeyed and sinned against God. God had told them not to eat of a certain tree. They were warned that they would die if they disobeyed God's command. Satan, using the serpent, told them they wouldn't die. Satan lied. Adam and Eve were separated from God and the garden of Eden. They died.

(16) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: (17) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16-17.

Read 2 Peter 3:8 and Genesis 5:5.

In Genesis Chapter 4 you can read how Cain and Abel both gave offerings to God. God had respect to Abel's offering. Read why in Genesis 4:3-5.

Hebrews 9:22 states that without shedding of blood there is no remission, meaning no forgiveness. Abel offered the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. In order to offer the fat of the animal, he had to kill it.

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:22.

Hebrews 9:12 says that by Jesus' own blood he obtained eternal redemption for us. Revelation 1:5 says that Jesus ". . . loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood. . . ."

Because the first man, Adam, sinned— all people became sinners. Jesus is the last Adam in this scripture.

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:45.

(18) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. (19) For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Romans 5:18-19.

You can see why our obedience to God is so important. Read Deuteronomy 28 about the cursings for disobedience and the blessings for obedience to God.

2. RECONCILED - GOD'S PLAN

Read Romans Chapter 5. All were made sinners because of Adam's sin. God didn't want it to stay that way so he sent Jesus to help us get back to God. Reconcile means to make friendly again, to settle a quarrel, or bring into harmony. God found a man (Abraham) that was willing to sacrifice his son to God in obedience. Abraham believed God and in his heart sacrificed his only begotten son in obedience to God. He would have done it physically, had the angel not stopped him. Read Hebrews 11:17-19. God sacrificed his only begotten son, Jesus. Jesus became the supreme, one time sacrifice of innocent blood that was able to reconcile us to God. Read Colossians 1:20.

(9) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Romans 5:9-10. Read Hebrews 10:10.

Jesus came to reconcile us to God. It was God's plan (John 3:16 and 1 Peter 1:17-21). God wants all to come to repentance through Christ Jesus. He wants all to be reconciled to God and to be in fellowship with our Creator. This is why God calls preachers and other witnesses to spread the word in Christ's stead. All who are saved are called to witness for Jesus.

(17) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (18) And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; (19) To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. (20) Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:17-20.

1 Corinthians 15:21-22, Read Ephesians Chapter 2.

(1) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (2) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2.

Jesus was crucified. He laid his own life down willingly. Read Luke 23:33. Abraham gave his son willingly to God when God commanded him to sacrifice him. Jesus willingly obeyed God in becoming the supreme sacrifice for all. Jesus made the decision to overcome the temptation to be delivered from the cross. He willingly made the decision to lay his life down and die so that whosoever would, could choose eternal life. Read John 10:1-18.

(17) Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. (18) No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. John 10:17-18.

This shows he was willing to be crucified for us. He knew he had power to finish the plan of redemption by being resurrected, that we also could be resurrected.

Why do we have to come to Jesus? It is because Jesus is the only way to get to God.

(7) Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. (8) All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. (9) I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (10) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (11) I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. John 10:7-11.

3. RANSOMED AND REDEEMED

Webster's Dictionary states that the definition of ransom is "the redeeming or release of a captive or of a seized property by payment of money or compliance of other demands. In theology, a means of freeing from sin; redemption. A synonym for ransom is rescue."

Jesus came to reconcile us to God. He has made a way for us to be free from sin. We have the chance to choose LIFE. Read Joshua 24:15. Choose whom you will serve. We are born in bondage to sin. Read all of Romans Chapter 5. Read Romans 5:12 & 17, Matthew 20:28.

He made all people of one blood, therefore ALL can be saved, redeemed, made free from sin to serve God and live eternally with him. Read Romans 11:32, Romans 6:16-23, Acts 17:26, Revelation 5:9.

But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. Galatians 3:22.

We can't get to heaven by our works. Jesus is the redeemer, the truth, the life, and the way. Read Romans 3:24, Ephesians 2:8-9, and 1 Corinthians 1:30, Ephesians 1:7.

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. Hebrews 9:12. Read verse 15.

(18) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; (19) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 1 Peter 1:18-19. Read all of 1 Peter Chapter 1.

Other references: Ephesians 4:30, Ephesians 1:14, Luke 21:28, Romans 8:23. OLD TESTAMENT scripture references: Job 19:25, Isaiah 44:6, Psalm 31:5, Psalm 107:2, Isaiah 44:22, Isaiah 63:9, Psalm 19:14, Psalm 78:35, Proverbs 23:11, Isaiah 48:17, and 1 Chronicles 17:21.

4. THE CROSS
(Also refer to the PRICE study)

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2.

The life of Jesus and his obedience to death on the cross were both in the will and plan of God for man's salvation. Jesus' life was a witness that we too can die to self and our own will in this world. Because of his resurrection, we can have eternal life.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16.

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Luke 23:33.

It was God's plan for Jesus to die on the cross to make reconciliation to God for man. He is the mediator between us and God. Two malefactors were crucified at the same time Jesus was crucified. One accepted Jesus as Savior, the other did not (Luke 23:39-43). Jesus was on a cross between two sinners. One repented and one did not. We can choose. Read Acts 2:23-24.

Jesus prayed earnestly in the garden of Gethsemane that the will of God be done, not his own will. He made the decision to die on the cross and obey God. He was a willing sacrifice. He knew he had power to finish the plan of redemption by being resurrected, that we also could be resurrected. Read John 19:10-11.

THE CROSS IS FOR JEWS AND GENTILES

The Jews were God's chosen people. When Jesus died on the cross he reconciled ALL to God: whosoever will may come and believe and obey him.

Read Ephesians 2:12-22 and Colossians 1:20-23. Jesus died on the cross so that he can present us holy and unblameable unto God. We were alienated and enemies to God by wicked works, but he has reconciled us to God, cleansing us of all sins.

REPROACH

Jesus endured the cross so we can be saved. Read John 12:24, John 12:32, John 6:40, Acts 5:31, Matthew Chapter 27 (about what they did to Jesus), and Hebrews 12:1-4, Galatians 3:13, 1 Corinthians 1:19-25, Psalm 22:6-8.

When you put your faith in God and you meet the conditions, He will not fail you. The conditions are written in God's Holy Word, the Bible. You will not be ashamed of trusting him. The following was prophesied about Jesus. He knew God would not fail him.

(6) I gave my backs to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. (7) For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. Isaiah 50:6-7.

It was a shame and reproach to be crucified. They crucified Jesus at the "place of a skull" (Mark 15:22 and John 19:17).

Jesus said wisdom is justified of her children. People will misunderstand you as you follow Jesus. While Jesus was suffering on the cross in terrible pain some were reviling him and telling him to save himself IF he was the Son of God (Matthew 27:40-42 and Mark 15:30-32). He was dying for their sins to be forgiven. They were unbelieving and unthankful. Read Matthew 11:18-19, 1 Timothy 4:10, Hebrews 13:13. Scapegoat example: Leviticus 16:5-22, Hebrews 11:26.

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Luke 23:34.

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Luke 6:22.

OUR CROSS

Read Matthew 10:33-34, Luke 9:23, Luke 14:27, 2 Timothy 3:12, Matthew 10:38.

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Galatians 6:14.

Following Jesus' example, we must die to our will and obey God.

SUFFERING

His body and blood was offered as sacrifice to God on Calvary to atone for our sins. We MUST become partakers of his suffering and take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23). He has also made us able to be "partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light" (Colossians 1:12). Jesus was the atoning sacrifice and expects us to become a living sacrifice, sacrificing what we want to do in life so we can do his will. If we obey Jesus, God will raise us up to eternal life (John 6:54). Jesus has purchased us with his own blood (Acts 20:28).

Read 1 Peter 2:22-25, 2 Timothy 1:8,1 Peter 4:13-16, 1 Peter 2:21, Luke 24:26.

(16) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (17) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (18) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Romans 8:16-18.

We must put God first. We need to have the mind of Christ to keep our priorities straight. Read Philippians 2:5-12

(12) Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12.

(9) But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. (10) For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Hebrews 2:9-10.

References on suffering and sacrifice: Romans 12:1-2, Romans 6:12, Galatians 2:20, Galatians 5:24, Colossians 3:1-3, 2 Timothy 3:12.

SELF DENIAL

(38) And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. (39) He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. Matthew 10:38-39.

Read Mark 10:17-31. One came running to Jesus and asked him, "What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" Jesus repeated the commandments to him, which he said he had observed from his youth. Then Jesus told him to sell what he had, give to the poor, and come and take up the cross and follow Him. The man was sad because he had great possessions. Read Mark 10:25.

(28) Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. (29) And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, (30) But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. Mark 10:28-30.

If we will die out to the desires of the flesh and put God first, then other souls can be brought into the kingdom of God. Read Romans 8:13, 1 Corinthians 15:31, and John 12:24-26.

INTERCESSION

Jesus partook of flesh and blood. We are partakers of Jesus and his sufferings and glory. Jesus is our high priest. Romans 8:34 says that Christ makes intercession for us. Because Jesus intercedes for us we are able to make it all the way to the end. Hebrews 3:14.

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:25.

Read all of Hebrews Chapter 4-Chapter 10 about Jesus' sacrifice and priesthood. Revelation 1:5 says that Jesus "...washed us from our sins in his own blood." Jesus sacrificed his life for us and therefore we have the victory over the devil. If we endure to the end, we shall obtain eternal life. Read Revelation 12:10-11.

PROPITIATION

(Webster's D.) PROPITIATION: an atoning sacrifice, especially Christ as this. The definition for propitiate: win or regain the good will of; appease or conciliate, pacify. Remember, a propitiation is something that appeases or regains the good will of. Jesus is our propitiation to God, our atonement, our way to God. Read 1 John 2:2.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12.

(23) For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; (24) Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (25) Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; Romans 3:23-25.

This is the end of SALVATION Bible Study, PART #2. Practice to see what you have learned. On the back of the page of questions write simply about (1) how someone could get saved and (2) the plan of salvation.
