1. THE BLOOD

Covenant

(Webster's D.) Covenant: in theology, the promises made by God to man, as recorded in the Bible. A binding and solemn agreement made by two or more individuals, parties, etc. to do or keep from doing a specified thing.

Read all 13 chapters in Hebrews. Hebrews Chapter 4 and 5 is about Jesus being our high priest. Hebrews Chapter 7 tells us there are no more animal sacrifices necessary. Hebrews Chapter 8 speaks of a better covenant which was established upon better promises. We have a new high priest who is set on the right hand of the God. Hebrews Chapter 9 is about the first covenant and the new covenant. Hebrews Chapter 10 tells us that Jesus is the final sacrifice for our atonement. Read Ephesians 5:2 and Hebrews 7:26-28.

(12) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (15) And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. Hebrews 9:12 & 15.

Hebrews 8 tells us that God found fault with the first covenant and that he would make a new covenant. Read all of Hebrews Chapter 10 .

(1) For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. (4) For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. (9) Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. (10) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (12) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; (14) For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (16) This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; (17) And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. (18) Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Hebrews 10:1, 4, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18.

You must realize that this is talking about no need for more blood sacrifice of any one or any thing for your sins. When Jesus saves you, forgiving you of all your sins, you are clean before God. We are commanded not to sin, but if we sin, Jesus is our advocate, according to 1 John 2:1. John 3:5-7 says we must be "born again." 1 John 3:9 says we cannot sin because we are born of God. Grace holds us for a time, BUT you can still backslide IF you reject God, even after serving him in the fullness Jesus has provided! Many scriptures prove this (refer to BACKSLIDE STUDY). Read John 8:11 and Hebrews 6:4-8. Keep the fear of God in your heart and you won't fall away from grace. Read Matthew 10:28.

(20) Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, (21) Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21.

(26) Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Hebrews 10:29. Read Hebrews 10:26-31.

Plead the blood

A Christian may say, "I plead the blood of Jesus." When this is done, they are calling on the Lord Jesus for protection or deliverance. There is power in the blood of Jesus. The devil can't get past the blood of Jesus. When Jesus was crucified, he was innocent. He became the blood sacrifice that was needed to put away the wrath of God. Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death. . . ." Ezekiel 18:4 says, ". . .the soul that sinneth, it shall die." God made a way since the first man and woman to be reconciled to God. First it was by the blood of animals, but that was not a perfect sacrifice. It had to be repeated many times (Hebrews 10:1-4). That was in effect till Jesus came and became the one- time sacrifice for all for ever (Hebrews 10:10) for those who believe and accept God's Word.

The cleansing blood of Jesus

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:22.

Those who are not covered by the blood sacrifice of Jesus are subject to the snares of the devil according to 2 Timothy 2:26 and, ". . . are taken captive by him at his will." For us to be forgiven of sin, Jesus willingly became the sacrifice that was needed and shed his innocent blood for our sins. Because he is resurrected, we also that believe and live for Jesus, can be resurrected. We can overcome the devil by the power Jesus has given us. Read Revelation 12:9-11. Read Revelation 1:18. When you are in combat with the devil, remind him of the power of the blood of Jesus. Don't forget your armor! (Ephesians 6)

Who has the power to"plead the blood of Jesus"?

If you are saved and your heart is clean you can effectively plead the blood of Jesus. If you have sinned, ask Jesus to forgive you. He will wash it away with his blood. Read about the seven sons of Sceva in Acts 19:13-16. John 9:31 says, ". . . God heareth not sinners. . . ." Abide in Christ and you will receive the things you ask of God. References: John 15:16, John 16:23-26, all of John 15, Ephesians 1:19.

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Romans 5:9.

Grow in Christ and seek the baptism of the Holy Ghost. When you receive the Holy Ghost, you receive power for service to God. Read Acts 1:8.

Jesus shed his blood for us

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8.

Jesus' blood dripped from his head where the crown of thorns was pushed in. The spear in his side caused blood and water to come out. The sweat was as blood when he was praying in the garden of Gethsemane before the crucifixion. The nails pierced his hands and feet. His beard was plucked out. Jesus went through much suffering and pain for us. References: Luke 22:44, John 19:34, Isaiah 50:6, John 19:1, Matthew 27:29, John 20:25.

Justification

Read Romans 5:1-2, Romans 4:25, All of Romans Chapter 8.

No excuse for sin

Jesus made the atonement to God for us. We don't have an excuse to sin. Through the power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost we can overcome the devil and make it to God. Jesus forgives our sins and expects us to quit sinning by His power in us. Read 1 Corinthians 10:13, James 4:7-8, 1 John 1:9, 1 John 2:1-2, and Isaiah 1:16.

Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Philippians 3:15.

2. ATONEMENT

ATONEMENT: satisfaction given for wrongdoing, injury, etc., amends. In theology, the effect of Jesus' sufferings and death in redeeming mankind and bringing about the reconciliation of God to man (Webster's Dictionary).

Christ Jesus came to live and die and be resurrected. He became our high Priest and is making intercession to God for us. He paid the penalty we owed for our sins: death.

The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23.

Sin makes God angry. He hates sin and does not "tolerate" it. He makes that plain in the Word of God. He commands us not to sin and gives specifics. He is just by telling us what he expects of us. When Adam, his first man, sinned, God was angry and said he had to die. He warned him not to eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree. Disobedience to God is sin and has most certain consequences. Because God still loved man, he made a way for his anger to be pacified. He killed animals as a substitute sacrifice for man. Adam did die, as God had said. Because one man sinned, all are in sin. Read Acts 17:26-27, Romans 3:23, and Romans 5:12 again.

In God's time, Jesus, God's Son, became the supreme sacrifice to atone for the sins of man. All who accept Jesus as the Savior can come to God and be saved. In Exodus, in the Old Testament, before God sent death to the firstborn of the Egyptians, the Israelites were commanded not to come out of the house where the lamb's blood was applied to the door facings, all the night. This world is full of darkness but Jesus is the light (John 8:12).

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: Colossians 1:13.

Stay under the blood covering for atonement that Jesus, the Lamb of God, has provided, and you will be safe.

ALL WERE SINNERS, ALL ONE BLOOD—CHRIST DIED FOR ALL

Jesus paid the price for ALL people to be saved in the atonement.

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; Acts 17:26.

Read all of Isaiah Chapter 53. It foretold what Jesus was going to go through to make atonement for our sins. Read Matthew 8:17.

(18) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (19) To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:18-19.

When Jesus read the above scriptures-Luke 4:18-19, he gave the book to the minister and sat down. Then he said, ". . . this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears."

(8) God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life, (11) And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Romans 5:8-11.

God ". . . made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth. . . ." (Acts 17:26). In the Old Testament, the rich and the poor had to give the same amount of offering for atonement. The same is true today, in that Jesus paid the price with his blood and ALL—the rich and the poor have to come to Jesus, who paid the price for us to be saved. Read Exodus 30:15.

And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him. Numbers 15:28.

In the New Testament Paul said he received forgiveness because he did it ignorantly in unbelief. Truly Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners. Jesus appeared to Saul, changed his name to Paul, and changed his life and soul. The next verse is about Paul.

Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief." 1 Timothy 1:13.

3. COMMUNION

Passover

Read exodus Chapter 12. The Old Testament was in effect before Jesus became the atonement for sin. Jesus obeyed the laws and ordinances given by God for that time. Jesus and the disciples participated in the "passover". This was in keeping with a commandment made when the Jews were brought out with a mighty deliverance from Egypt. God made a way for his people to be "passed over" by the death angel God sent to destroy the firstborn of Egypt. He said when he saw the blood applied to the door posts He would pass over them (Exodus 12:13). They had to kill a male lamb without blemish, cook it a certain way, eat it with bitter herbs, and put the blood on the door posts. If they obeyed they would not be touched by the death angel that night. This is the way it is with our salvation by Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29 & 36, Revelation 21:23, and Revelation 22:3).

Because of Jesus' blood we can have our sins washed away and not be subject to the second death which results in eternal hell (Revelation 20:6). He is the Lamb who was slain to cleanse us of sin. We must keep our sins "under the blood" to be acceptable to God. Revelation 1:5 tells us that he ". . . loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood. . . ."

Flesh and Blood

Jesus came to give us life and more abundantly. As in this life we must eat and drink to stay alive, so also is it in the spiritual life. We must drink spiritual drink and eat spiritual food. We must be partakers of Christ's blood and body spiritually. In taking of communion, the bread represents his body and the grape juice represents his blood.

(53) Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. (54) Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (55) For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. (56) He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. (57) As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. (58) This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. John 6:53-58.

27) And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; (28) For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:27-28.

Jesus said that he lived by the Father and we are to live by Jesus. How do we do this? Jesus obeyed every word of God (Matthew 4:4). We have to obey every word of the LIVING WORD OF GOD which is JESUS. We do not literally eat his flesh and drink his blood. Jesus was speaking of spiritual things. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). In Deuteronomy 12:16 and Acts 15:20 he says not to drink blood. He teaches also that it is abomination to eat the flesh of other human beings. God said he would abhor the ones that did it (Leviticus 26:28-30, Deuteronomy 28:53, Jeremiah 19:9-13, and Ezekiel 5:10).

(1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:1 & 14.

When Jesus mixed the wine and the bread he called it a "sop" and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed our Lord Jesus Christ.

(26) Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. (27) And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. John 13:26-27.

We eat a piece of unleavened bread and drink a bit of grape juice at communion as symbols of the atoning work Jesus did at Calvary. We have to ABIDE in Christ so closely that it is as if we had his flesh and blood in us; we live as he lived, holy and without sin. Our hope and promise of eternal life depends on us abiding in Christ, with his blood applied to us and truly living by the bread of heaven—Jesus.

Bread of Life:

For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. John 6:33.

(48) I am that bread of life. (49) Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. (50) This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. (51) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John 6:48-51.

Partakers

Taking communion, partaking of the unleavened bread and wine (grape juice) shows we are also partaking of the spiritual things Jesus has provided for us at Calvary. If we continue in Christ and overcome, it is promised that we shall inherit all things (Revelation 21:7). Read Colossians 1:12, 2 Corinthians 1:7, 1 Corinthians 10:16, 1 Corinthians 10:21.

(14) Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (15) And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (16) For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. (17) Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. (18) For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. Hebrews 2:14-15.

Remembrance

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Luke 22:19. Read also 1 Corinthians 11:24-25. Read Mark 14:22-25.

Should I Take Communion?

If you know Jesus as your Savior, you can take communion. However, if you are a sinner, backslid, or under condemnation, do not take communion until you are covered with the blood of Jesus through repentance of sin. When your heart is clean you should take communion. It is a sign to others that you belong to Jesus. It is a reminder to yourself that you are a partaker of all he has for you. He paid the price so that we can obtain salvation, healing, blessing and all the promises he has made to us.

(26) For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. (27) Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (28) But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. (29) For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the lord's body. (30) For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. (31) For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (32) But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. 1 Corinthians 11:26-31.

4. NEW TESTAMENT

God desires that every one would choose to serve him and obtain eternal life. We have the Old Testament and the New Testament in the Bible. Jesus brought in the New Testament. Webster's Dictionary says that a TESTAMENT is a will, a solemn covenant. A TESTATOR is one who is deceased and has left a legally valid will. Jesus did die for us and left us his will that includes many promises. That will would be no good if Jesus did not resurrect. He did raise from the dead and will also raise us from the dead if we believe and serve him. To TESTIFY is to bear witness or give evidence.

(4) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. (5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (6) Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 1 Timothy 2:4-6.

(15) And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. (16) For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. (17) For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. (18) Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. (19) For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, (20) Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. (21) Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. (22) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:15-22.
