WHY
SHOULD I STUDY THE BIBLE?
LESSON
#2
1. It is the Word of God.
(7) The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the
soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the
simple. (8) The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing
the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes. (9) The fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and
righteous altogether. (10) More to be desired are they
than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than
honey and the honeycomb. (11) Moreover by them is thy
servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great
reward. Psalms 19:7-11.
2. The Word of God is able to make us wise unto salvation.
His Word is perfect and it is given that the children of God
may be perfect. The word is profitable. It will lead you to
eternal life.
(15) And that from a child thou hast known the holy
scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (16) All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may
be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 2
Timothy 3:15-17.
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have
eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John
5:39.
3. If his Word abides in you, he promises to give
you what you ask for.
(7) If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye
shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. (8)
Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so
shall ye be my disciples. John 15:7-8.
4. God's Word was written that we might have hope.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were
written for our learning, that we through patience and
comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4.
5. Jesus told some religious people that they were wrong
because they did not know the scriptures.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not
knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. Matthew
22:29.
6. We study the Word so the Lord won't be ashamed of us.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that
needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth. 2 Timothy 2:15.
7. After we become a true Christian, we are to win souls to
Christ. Use the scriptures.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready
always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a
reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
1 Peter 3:15.
For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly,
shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. Acts
18:28.
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught,
that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and
to convince the gainsayers. Titus 1:9.
8. We study the Word of God because we are believers.
(12) That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called
you unto his kingdom and glory. (13) For this cause also
thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received
the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not
as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of
God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1
Thessalonians 2:12-13.
9. As a warrior in God's army we must have the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God. Studying the Word
prepares us to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Read
Ephesians 6:10-18.
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel
of peace; Ephesians 6:15.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God: Ephesians 6:17.
10. God desires us to grow up to maturity in Christ.
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word
of righteousness: for he is a babe. Hebrews 5:13. Read
Hebrews 6:1-2.
11. We need to study the Word so we won't sin. It is
God's law.
Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin
against thee. Psalm 119:11.
12. Deuteronomy tells us how important the Word should be
to our daily lives.
Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not
deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and
worship them; Deuteronomy 11:16.
(18) Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your
heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your
hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
(19) And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of
them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou
walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou
risest up. (20) And thou shalt write them upon the door
posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: Deuteronomy
11:18-20.
13. The Word says that God will plead with all flesh by
fire and by his sword.
For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all
flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many. Isaiah
66:16.
fire: I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Matthew 3:11.
fire: John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed
baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the
latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Luke 3:16.
sword: And take the helmet of salvation, and the
sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Ephesians
6:17.
sword: For the word of God is quick, and powerful,
and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the
dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of
the heart. Hebrews 4:12.
When you study the Bible, and as you study these lessons,
be careful to study the scriptures around the scriptures
given, so that you will fully understand what is written. It
takes a consistent prayer life and a continuous study of the
Bible for a new or old Christian to grow in grace.
