REPENTANCE
LESSON
#4, (Part 2)
REPENTANCE
FROM DEAD WORKS
(1) Therefore
leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go
on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance
from dead works, and of faith toward God, (2) Of the doctrine
of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection
of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:1-2.
These
are the principles of the doctrine of Christ that lay the
foundation for our salvation. Repentance from dead works is
the first principle of the doctrine of Christ. To receive
salvation, we must be sorry and repent of our sins, asking
God to forgive us. Then we must stop sinning.
Remember
that repentance that to repent is to feel so contrite over
one's sins as to change, or decide to change, one's ways.
Repentance from dead works means to change from the sinful
works you used to do.
Nevertheless
the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The
Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth
the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19.
For we
must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every
one may receive the things done in his body, according to
that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 2 Corinthians
5:10.

1. PURGE
YOUR CONSCIENCE FROM DEAD WORKS
CONSCIENCE:
a knowledge or feeling of right and wrong, with a compulsion
to do right; moral judgment that prohibits or opposes the
violation of a previously recognized ethical principle. MIND:
that which thinks, perceives, feels, wills, etc.
How much
more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14.
Read
Titus 1:15 and Titus 3:1-7.
(21)
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your
mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled (22) In the
body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable
and unreproveable in his sight: Colossians 1:21-22.
The like
figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the
putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of
a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus
Christ: 1 Peter 3:21.
Water
baptism does not save us. The blood of Jesus cleanseth us
from all sin (1 John 1:7). We are commanded to be water baptized
and it is part of our foundation in Christ (Hebrews 6:1-2).
Water baptism is a symbolic work showing that you have been
cleansed from dead works (Romans 6:4) and now have a good
and clean conscience, giving you confidence to serve God (1
John 3:20-22).
2. MIND
OF CHRIST
The blood
of Jesus Christ purges our conscience from dead works (Hebrews
9:14). He forgives us and our hearts and minds are clean.
To stay clean, we must have the MIND OF CHRIST.
(1) I
beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that
ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
unto God, which is your reasonable service. (2) And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing
of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable,
and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1-2
Let this
mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Philippians
2:5. Read all of that chapter.
Wherefore
gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the
end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation
of Jesus Christ; 1 Peter 1:13.
We are
supposed to die to the flesh daily (1 Corinthians 15:31) and
Christ will live in us (Galatians 2:20). The scriptures make
us know that if we put on the mind of Christ, seek God, and
deny ourselves the ungodly things we want, we will stop sinning.
(6) For
to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded
is life and peace. (7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against
God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed
can be. Romans 8:6-7. Read all of Romans chapter 8
3. MAKE
UP YOUR MIND. You can't serve two masters.
You can
not serve God AND the devil. That is why you must repent and
change from the devil's works and the works of the flesh to
serve God with all your being (read Deuteronomy 6:5). Read
James 1:8 and James 4:8 about double mindedness.
No servant
can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and
love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise
the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Luke 16:13.
The definition
for MAMMON is: 1) the false god of riches and avarice, 2)
riches regarded as an object of worship and greedy pursuit.
4. CEASE
TO DO YOUR OWN WORKS AND START WORKING FOR GOD. Read Proverbs
28:13.
This
flesh must cease to do its own works and do the works of God.
How can we do this? God will help us. We must be faithful
in the least things that we can be made ruler over many things
(Matthew 25:21). Jesus will work with us and through us as
we give in to him. Read John 14:10.
(1) Forasmuch
then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves
likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in
the flesh hath ceased from sin; (2) That he no longer should
live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men,
but to the will of God. 1 Peter 4:1-2.
(11)
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared
to all men, (12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and
worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly,
in this present world; (13) Looking for that blessed hope,
and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ; (14) Who gave himself for us, that he might
redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar
people, zealous of good works. (15) These things speak, and
exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise
thee. Titus 2:11-15.
Jesus
is the LIVING Word (read John chapter 1) which effectually
can work in us that believe, when we have repented of our
dead works. God's written Word is powerful (Hebrews 4:12).
For this
cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye
received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received
it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word
of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
1 Thessalonians 2:13.
5. DEAD
WORKS
(19)
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;
Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, (20) Idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions,
heresies, (21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings,
and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also
told you in time past, that they which do such things shall
not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21.
Thus
were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring
with their own inventions. Psalm 106:39. Read Romans 10:3.
Having
therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves
from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness
in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 7:1.
Who his
own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we,
being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose
stripes ye were healed. 1 Peter 2:24.
6. BY
THE SPIRIT
If we
disobey God, it is sin (Hebrews 2:2 & Ephesians 5:6). To repent
means to be sorry and to change. We must overcome the flesh,
the world, and the devil to enter eternal life. We are able
to overcome by the Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost. Read these
scriptures about the promises to the overcomer: James 1:12,
Rev. 2:7, 11, 17, 26. Read 2 Corinthians 3:18, Philippians
3:14, John 14:12, and James 2:17-18. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
that tells what the name of Jesus and the Spirit of our God
will do!
It is
the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the
words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are
life. John 6:63.
For Christ
also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,
that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh,
but quickened by the Spirit: 1 Peter 3:18.
But if
the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell
in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also
quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in
you. Romans 8:11.
For if
ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the
Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Romans
8:13.
That he
would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to
be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
Ephesians 3:16.
If you
have truly repented of dead works, your life will show it.
You will receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon you.
The Holy Ghost is referred to in the Bible sometimes as the
Spirit or Holy Spirit.
But ye
shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost
part of the earth. Acts 1:8.
7. WALK
IN THE SPIRIT
The Bibles
says we must die to the deeds of the flesh and walk in the
Spirit (Galatians 5:16). Then we can please God. Then the
Spirit will work through us and show forth the fruit of the
Spirit which is the opposite of the works of the flesh, just
as God and good is the opposite of the devil and evil. Read
Matthew 7:21 and ALL of chapter 7.
(22)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, (23) Meekness, temperance: against
such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23.
8. CONTINUE
TO BE SANCTIFIED
READ
AND STUDY ALL OF ROMANS 6.
Let not
sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey
it in the lusts thereof. Romans 6:12.
I speak
after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh:
for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness
and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members
servants to righteousness unto holiness. Romans 6:19.
But whoso
looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein,
he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this
man shall be blessed in his deed. James 1:25.
But be
ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your
own selves. James 1:22.
TRY TO
MEMORIZE THIS VERSE. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT:
And I
saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books
were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book
of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which
were written in the books, according to their works. Revelation
20:12.
