THE HOLY
GHOST IS OF GOD
The Holy
Ghost is real and is for us. God promises the Holy Ghost to
obedient believers in Christ Jesus (Acts 5:32). God cannot
lie. The Bible speaks of the testimony of two or three witnesses
causing a thing to be established. Read Deuteronomy 19:15,
John 8:17, and Matthew 18:16. God gives us three witnesses
in heaven and three witnesses in earth that what he says is
true.
For there
are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word,
and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 1 John 5:7.
And there
are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the
water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 1 John
5:8.
The Holy
Ghost was manifest in the Old Testament but no one was filled
with the Holy Ghost baptism then. Read Mark 12:36 how that
the Holy Ghost spoke through David. Read Acts 1:16 how David
was used again by the Holy Ghost using his mouth. Read in
Acts about when and how the Holy Ghost Baptism was given in
fullness. Read John 7:39 about how the Spirit was not given
until Jesus was glorified. Jesus said "If I go not away, the
Comforter will not come...." (John 16:7).
For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy
men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter
1:21.
TWO BAPTISMS
Water
baptism is called the baptism of repentance. It shows the
world you believe God and have repented of your sins. He told
the people that there was one coming who would baptize them
with the Holy Ghost and fire. Read Luke 3:16 and John 1:33.
John
did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance
for the remission of sins. Mark 1:4.
John the
Baptist preached that you need to repent, confess your sins,
and be baptized. Luke 1:17 tells how the preaching of John
the Baptist about repentance and water baptism prepared the
people for the coming of Jesus. It also prepares us for the
greater things of God. There is repentance, water baptism,
the Holy Ghost baptism, growing in grace and knowledge of
Jesus, and sanctification. We go on in Christ to receive the
gifts of the Spirit, and on and on till we are to obtain the
"stature of the fulness of Christ:"(Ephesians 4:13). We are
able to build on the foundation God provided for us. Hebrews
6:1-2 lists the principles of the doctrine of Christ. The
doctrine of baptisms is listed there. The word "baptisms"
is plural, meaning more than one baptism.
Therefore
leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go
on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance
from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine
of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection
of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:1-2.
Remember
John 6:44. God is a Spirit. The Spirit of God draws you to
him to be saved. Sometimes "Spirit" is talking about God,
who is a spirit (John 4:24), and sometimes it refers to the
Holy Ghost. In Acts 2:17 he refers to the in filling of the
Holy Ghost.
Jesus
answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the
kingdom of God. John 3:5.
(17)
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will
pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your
daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams: Acts 2:17.
1. PROPHECY
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT ABOUT THE HOLY GHOST:
(11)
For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak
to this people. (12) To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith
ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing:
yet they would not hear. Isaiah 28:11-12.
(28)
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out
my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young
men shall see visions: (29) And also upon the servants and
upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Joel 2:28-29.
(19)
And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit
within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh,
and will give them an heart of flesh: (20) That they may walk
in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and
they shall be my people, and I will be their God. Ezekiel
11:19-20.
(26)
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I
put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of
your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. (27) And
I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in
my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Ezekiel 36:26-27.
But this
shall be the covenant that I will make with the house Israel;
After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their
inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their
God, and they shall be my people. Jeremiah 31:33.
For then
will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may call
upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
Zephaniah 3:9.
Read
Acts chapters 1 & 2 about when the Holy Ghost fell on the
day of Pentecost. When Peter tried to explain to the people
what had happened, he reminded them of the prophecy in Joel
about the Holy Ghost.
(16)
But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; (17)
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will
pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your
daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams: (18) and on my servants
and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my
Spirit; and they shall prophesy: Acts 2:16-18.
(15)
Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after
that he had said before, (16) This is the covenant that I
will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will
put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write
them; (17) And their sins and iniquities will I remember no
more. Hebrews 10:15-17.
These
scriptures give witness that the Holy Ghost is from God and
is for us. If we are saved, we are the children of God by
faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26). If we are true believers,
we must believe what the Word says about the Holy Ghost.
2. THE
GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST
The gift
of the Holy Ghost comes from God to them that ask for it (Luke
11:13& Matthew 7:11) and obey him (Acts 5:32).
Furthermore
we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we
gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection
unto the Father of spirits and live? Hebrews 12:9.
(38)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one
of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (39) For
the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all
that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall
call. Acts 2:38-39.
The Holy
Ghost was promised in the Old Testament. That promise was
fulfilled in the New Testament. It will continue till Jesus
comes back.
Being
confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good
work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Philippians 1:6.
(37)
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood
and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me,
and drink. (38) He that believeth on me, as the scripture
hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
(39) (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe
on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given;
because that Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39.
When
the Holy Ghost was poured out, as was prophesied in Joel 2:28-29,
the disciples were waiting in obedience to the command of
Christ. They waited in prayer for the gift that was promised
to them (Acts 1:4). In Acts 2:33 Peter said they received
the promise of the Holy Ghost.
3. WHO
IS THE HOLY GHOST?
But the
Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send
in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things
to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John
14:26.
But when
the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the
Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the
Father, he shall testify of me: John 15:26.
Even
the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because
it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for
he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:17.
For ye
have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but
ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba,
Father. Romans 8:15. Read all of Romans 8.
4. THE
PURPOSE OF THE HOLY GHOST
a. Comforter
h. Power to change you
b. Guide/revealer of spiritual things
I. Conviction
c. Teacher
j. Sanctification
d. Intercessor
k. Avenue for the gifts of the Spirit
e. Refreshing
f. Power to witness and work for God
g. Power against devils
The Holy
Ghost helps us in many ways. It gives us access to the power
of God. Access: read Romans 5:2, Ephesians 3:12, and Hebrews
4:16, and Ephesians 2:18.
a. COMFORTER
Jesus returned to the Father. He sent back the Holy Ghost
to us. Read John 16:28, John 16,7, and John 14:18 & 26.
Try to
memorize these: John 15:26, Romans 15:13, and Acts 9:31.
b. GUIDE/revealer
of spiritual things
God knows
all things (Job 31:4). Jesus is our mediator (Hebrews 12:24
& 9:15). Jesus knows all things. He knows the future. When
Jesus wants us to know something, the Holy Ghost can reveal
it to us. Read Acts 20:23.
Read
carefully and try to remember John 16:13-15, Ephesians 3:5,
and 1 Corinthians 2:10-12.
How did
the Holy Ghost speak? God can make you to know what he wants
you to know and what you need to know. He reveals things to
us by his Spirit (1 Corinthians 1:10). He can put knowledge
in our minds. He can speak to us through the gifts of the
spirit and there are 9 of them listed in 1 Corinthians chapter
12. The Lord can also cause you to have dreams and visions
by the Spirit (Joel 2:28-29). God can still speak audibly.
He does not change (Numbers 12:8 & Mal 3:6).
Read
carefully: Acts 13:2 & 4, Acts 8:29, Acts 8:39-40, Acts 16:6,
Acts 11:12, Acts 11:28, Acts 16:7, and Acts 21:4.
Discern
means to perceive or recognize. Read 1 Corinthians 2:14 about
"spiritually discerned" (not the gift of discerning of spirits
in 1 Corinthians 12).
But strong
meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who
by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both
good and evil. Hebrews 5:14.
LED BY
THE SPIRIT:
Then
was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted
of the devil. Matthew 4:1. Read Mark 1:12 & Luke 4:1.
Twice
the Holy Ghost led Simeon. First by revealing something and
then by guiding him at the right time. Read Luke 2:25-27.
Read and memorize Romans 8:14.
c. TEACHER
Read 1
John 2:27, Luke 12:12, Mark 13:11, and 1 Corinthians 2:13.
d. INTERCESSOR
(26)
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know
not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be
uttered. (27) And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what
is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession
for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27.
Read
Jude 1:20 and Ephesians 6:18.
e. REFRESHING
Read
Isaiah 28:11-12, Hebrews 3:1 to Hebrews 4:11, and 1 Corinthians
6:11.
Not by
works of righteousness which we have done, but according to
his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and
renewing of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:5.
f. POWER
TO WITNESS AND WORK FOR GOD
It gives
you strength to know you have hope of reward for your labor.
The power of the Holy Ghost gives you that assurance and boldness.
Our labor for the Lord is not in vain. Read 1 Corinthians
15:5, Colossians 1:29, and Romans 15:13. The Holy Ghost gives
us courage and boldness to witness, and to obey the command
to go into all the world and preach to every creature (Mark
16:15).
And when
they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled
together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and
they spake the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31.
But ye
shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost
part of the earth. Acts 1:8.
And my
speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's
wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 1
Corinthians 2:4.
Jesus
is our example. Read Acts 10:38 and John 14:12.
Through
mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God;
so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I
have fully preached the gospel of Christ. Romans 15:19.
The Holy
Ghost gives us power to witness because when we pray in the
Holy Ghost, it helps us stay in the love of God (Ephesians
4:15). You've got to love God in order to love sinners, wanting
them to get saved. When we love God we will keep his commandments
(John 14:15 & 23) and he commanded us to go into all the world
and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15)!
(20)
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy
faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, (21) Keep yourselves in
the love of god, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ
unto eternal life. Jude 1:20-21.
And hope
maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad
in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Romans
5:5.
g. POWER
AGAINST DEVILS
Jesus
gave his disciples power to cast out devils. We are his disciples
today. True believers will repent, be baptized in water, and
be baptized with the Holy Ghost. True believers in Christ
Jesus, who reach the "stature of the fulness of Christ:" (Ephesians
4:13) will do according to Mark 16:15-20 (read it).
Jesus
gave his twelve disciples power against unclean spirits (Matthew
10:1) and has given us power over all the power of the enemy
(Luke 10:19). Read about what happened to the seven sons of
Sceva who did not have the Holy Ghost and tried to cast out
devils (Acts 19).
h. POWER
TO CHANGE YOU
Read
2 Corinthians 3:18. The Holy Ghost will give you boldness
to stand. Peter was like a double minded man (James 1:8).
Jesus made him able to stand. Jesus said "when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren." Look at Peter on the day of Pentecost
after being baptized with the Holy Ghost (Acts 1 & 2). To
convert is to change from one religion, doctrine, opinion,
course, or action to another. Read in Acts how Peter boldly
spoke to the people of Jesus Christ after he received the
Holy Ghost. He was changed. We also are changed by the Spirit
of God.
(31)
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired
to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: (32) But I have
prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art
converted, strengthen thy brethren. (33) And he said unto
him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and
to death. (34) And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall
not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that
thou knowest me. Luke 22:31-34. Read also verse 54.
But if
the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell
in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also
quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in
you. Romans 8:11.
This
I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the
lusts of the flesh. Galatians 5:16. Read also verse 17. Read
Gal. 6:7-9.
I. CONVICTION
Read
John 16:7 & 8. The Holy Ghost can lead you to Christ through
conviction of sin. Conviction means being convicted. To convict
is to bring to a realization of one's guilt. Romans 3:23 tells
us that ALL have sinned.
After
we are saved and filled with the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost
will continue to deal with us if we do something wrong. Through
the power of the Holy Ghost, we can put our will down and
do what God commands us to do in his Word.
Read
and try to memorize these scriptures: Romans 8:13, Revelation
22:17, John 6:44, and Isaiah 10:27.
j. SANCTIFICATION
We are
sanctified by the Holy Ghost. Read Romans 15:16, 1 Cor. 6:11,
and 2 Thessalonians 2:13. We are strengthened in the inner
man and purified by his Spirit. Read Ephesians 3:16 & 1 Peter
1:22.
Read Galatians
5:16-25 about walking in the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit.
Read Ephesians 5:9 & Romans 8:13.
k. AVENUE
FOR THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT: The gifts of the Spirit are listed.
Read 1 Corinthians 12:4-7. Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 12-14
about the gifts of the Spirit. Since they are "gifts" of the
Spirit, you must have the Spirit (the Holy Ghost) before you
can manifest the "gifts of the Spirit." Jesus did not intend
for the gospel to be preached without the Holy Ghost being
preached also. Read 1 Thessalonians 1:5.
