Preface
(Turn to God with a broken heart)
Psalm 51:17 says, “The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou
wilt not despise.” If we are truly sorry, we will do
something about the problem. We will fully repent. We will
listen to God, and we will obey Him.
If there is sin in your life, don’t expect God to
listen to you. When we fully turn back to God, He will hear
us and answer our prayers.
This
sermon, True Repentance, was preached October 14,
2001 a.m. It has been edited for publication purposes.
Kevin Badgley, the author, is the Pastor of Living Hope
Fellowship Church.
TRUE REPENTANCE
by Pastor Kevin Badgley
GOD
HEARETH NOT SINNERS
John 9:31 says, “Now we know that God heareth not sinners:
but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will,
him he heareth.” This is the basis for all repentance.
Our nation has been estranged from God. Our nation is now
being propagated as a nation of freedom loving people - free
to do as they please. They worship the god that they will,
to live with one another in harmony, but our country was not
founded in such a way. Our country was founded
Christian, and Christianity is not compatible with other
gods. The only way that will get you to God is through
the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
The Bible says that there is only one God. There is a whole
chapter devoted to the miracle of restored sight that Jesus
performed on a man who was born blind. The man’s biggest
challenges came after he could see! He realized the
Pharisees had dead religion. He had a challenge to
cohabitate with the Pharisees or to go on for Christ who had
called him.
We can’t even repent except the Spirit of the Lord deals
with us. This blind man who was just delivered by the hand
of Jesus knew that God hears not sinners. The Bible says
the wicked and all nations that forget God
shall be turned into hell. This denotes that the true
God was at one time their God, as we see in the
United States of America.
God is a mighty God, and He will not listen to unclean
mouths. God does not adhere to all religion. God is not
ecumenical or group oriented. God is holy and righteous.
God is pure and clean, and He calls for His people to be
likewise.
The only hope for America is for it to cry out to God for
mercy. The sinner needs to run to a child of the living God
and cry for them to intercede for them, that God would deal
with them again. They must call upon the Lord as He deals
with them, so they can be saved. Only then will God hear
them.
The only time that God will hear a sinner is when he cries
out for forgiveness when God is dealing with him. It
behooves us as Christians to pray that God will deal with
sinners, and that God will deal with Christians who have let
down their guard and let the world creep in.
This blind man who was healed began to preach. He said in
John 9:31, “. . . if any man be a worshipper of God, and
doeth his will, him he heareth.” Some will cry out to God,
and some will worship God, but there is another condition.
You must do His will. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love
me, keep my commandments.”
Repentance is a powerful thing. The Bible says that a
broken and a contrite heart God will not despise. He will
not turn away from it. The word contrite means “bruised”.
If we are not repentant, we cannot get to heaven. God is
near to all who are of a broken and contrite heart. Tragedy
comes to us from time to time to break our hearts. It may
break our hearts for somebody else, but generally He has to
allow it to come to us personally, because that is when God
is near. When your heart is broken that is when you are
sincere,
BROKEN
Being contrite is not being melancholy. God wants
us to come to Him broken. The only way that our nation will
be healed is for it to be broken. The only way that God
will hear a sinner is for him to broken down. The only way
God will hear a Christian who has gone back from his first
love is for him to repent.
Immediately after the tragedy of 911 we heard a lot from
preachers about repentance. Thank God that some of them are
notifying the people that because of sin in the land our
hedges are down. The threat of Anthrax is now everywhere.
No one is exempt. America has suddenly lost it’s sense of
indestructibility; it’s invulnerability to judgment.
It is a tap on the shoulder that says, “Hey you, wake up!”
God is waiting to see what we will do with it.
The struggle within Chapter 9 in John was between a man who
was truly repentant and the church at large who didn’t
understand his miracle. I tell you that we will not get
miracles until we learn repentance, until we learn
contrition, humility, and brokenness before God. I have
watched people saunter up to the alter chewing gum and
cocking their head from side to side wanting God to do
something for them! I find that amazing.
I want you to search down deep into your soul now. Have you
ever tried to be sorry for something that you really
weren’t? We hear the term, and we chuckle at it, Excuse
ME! The words are spoken, but the heart is far from
it.
That which is unclean cannot make itself clean without help
from another which is greater. We need help from one who is
higher - Jesus. I’m talking to the Christian today as much
as I’m talking to the sinner and the backslider.
If we cannot come to a place of repentance, God is deaf to
us. The Pharisees prayed and fasted often, but Jesus said
in Matthew 5:20, “For I say unto you, That except your
righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes
and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of
heaven.”
Jesus opened the eyes of the blind man. The man had not met
Jesus as yet face to face with his new eyes. Every time you
want to thank and praise Jesus for what He has done in your
life, you will run into some Pharisee or devil who will
challenge you about seeking the Lord and about your
humility. The devil cannot understand brokenness because he
has sealed his destiny. Satan is proud, arrogant, selfish,
and rebellious. These are his traits, and human beings can
take them on easily.
Jesus said that the devils are judged already. Jesus said
in John 14:30, “Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for
the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”
That is a terrifying thing for the Lord to say about a
being, He cannot influence me, or He cannot move
me.
There is a place when God gets fed up with things. He told
Jeremiah in Jeremiah 7:16, “Therefore pray not thou for this
people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither
make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.”
SIN IN
THE CAMP
I was casting the devils out of woman, and I was having
difficulty with one. She had several powers within her that
were operating her life. She could not control herself.
Reason was there, but the rest of her body belonged to
Satan, and she did whatever she had to do to please him, or
he tormented her.
As I was casting the devils out of her she said, I can’t
get rid of this alcohol, because I still lust for it. I
continued to pray and I asked, God, why is this so
difficult? He spoke to me that she would not totally
yield over to Him. She wanted to keep her lust spirit! God
told me to ask her about the man she was living with. I
thought, She is living with a man, and then comes to a
minister to be delivered?
I confronted her with this and she began to cry real tears.
She said, Oh, but I love it. Just free me from my
alcohol. I said, So, in other words, you want God to
selectively free you from the devils. You want to be free
from some devils, but keep some of them. Is that correct?
She began to wail then. It was confronting her.
Deliverance is not a pretty ministry, but it is the most
desperately needed one in the church of Jesus Christ today!
I stood up over the woman and said, All or nothing. You
need to make up your mind. She said, But, I love
him. I put on my coat and went home. God is not going
to take you partially. God wants all of you, or He wants
none of you.
Jesus said in Luke 11:23, “He that is not with me is against
me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.”
He said in Matthew 10:33, “But whosoever shall deny me
before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is
in heaven.” He said that sin shall not enter in.
Joshua and all the children of Israel had won battle after
battle going into the Promised Land. The glorious victory
of Jericho was still ringing in their ears, but they
couldn’t overcome Ai. They got down on their faces after
being defeated and asked God why. They knew God had called
them to defeat them so they could enter in.
God spoke to them as they were seeking Him in brokenness,
and God told Joshua that it was because there was sin in
the camp. Joshua 7:1 says that Achan, “. . . took of
the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled
against the children of Israel.”
Joshua 7:24-25 says, “And Joshua, and all Israel with him,
took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the
garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his
daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and
his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto
the valley of Achor. And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled
us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel
stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after
they had stoned them with stones.”
Achan had compromised their ability to fight. He put holes
in the hedge where the enemy could rout them out. They got
rid of the sin, and Verse 26 says, “. . . So the LORD turned
from the fierceness of his anger. . . .”
You need to read Psalm 78. It talks about the children of
Israel coming out of Egypt. Psalm 78:30 says, “They were
not estranged from their lust. . . .” They were out of
Egypt all right, but Egypt was still in them, and it was
still troubling and tormenting them.
They saw God’s mighty miracles. They saw the Egyptians
destroyed by the hand of Almighty God. They saw the clouds
by day and the pillar of fire by night. They heard the
voice speak from the mountain, yet they were not estranged
from their lust. God gave them their desire for meat, but
while the meat was yet in their mouth God smote them, even
the chosen ones!
People look with gloom at the end time plagues that have
been prophesied, and they will come. One instance is that
one third of everything that breathes will die. Think of
the stench, the disease, and the horror! Think of the
absolutely inconsolable wailing.
However, all of that pales in comparison to what God says is
happening in the Bride, His Church, who is supposed to hold
the truth! 1 Timothy 4:1 says, “Now the Spirit speaketh
expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart
from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and
doctrines of devils;”
He says that this is what is perilous - 2 Timothy 3:1-7
says, “This know also, that in the last days perilous
times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own
selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient
to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection,
trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce,
despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady,
highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof:
from such turn away. For of this sort are they which
creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with
sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never
able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
During perilous times some shall have a form of godliness,
but they will deny the power thereof. He said from such
turn away, but people can’t stand to turn away. They don’t
want to stick out or be different. We don’t want a
reproach, but when Jesus hung on the cross of Calvary for
you and for me, He bore reproach.
God’s people were not estranged from their lust. The word
estranged is a word we use like divorced, but it literally
means “to lose affection for”. They were out of Egypt, but
they hadn’t lost their affection for what Egypt could do for
them, Egypt’s provision for them.
Manna was anointed bread that came literally out of heaven
that they gathered every morning and evening. On Fridays
they would gather it, and it would hold up until Sunday,
because Saturday was their Sabbath. They were
supernaturally, every day, eating a miracle! They were
walking in a miracle, and yet they wanted the leeks and the
onions of Egypt. They got to the place where they even
loathed this light bread. They were tired of it, and they
wanted a change.
Their heart was not mixed with faith. Romans 10:17 says,
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of
God.” The Word of God will not come nigh until we are in a
place to where He can come nigh, and that is only through
repentance. Repentance is not just saying, I’m
sorry enough times.
Psalm 53:2-3 says, “God looked down from heaven upon the
children of men, to see if there were any that did
understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone
back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that
doeth good, no, not one.”
In Ezekiel 22:30 God said, “And I sought for a man among
them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap
before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I
found none.”
God is looking for someone, even as Daniel did for Israel,
to stand in the gap in this day for America, but can He find
somebody that means business with God?
God wants us to seek Him, but many times God doesn’t fit in
our schedule. He tries to get our attention. Job 33:19
says, “He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the
multitude of his bones with strong pain:”
I have preached funerals for the young and the old, sinners
and saints. There are only two places you can go when you
go into eternity. You will go to heaven or to hell, and you
are going there forever. Repentance makes the difference
in where you spend eternity.
The Lord said that repentance is the first step toward
translation. He said there is a transformation that comes
upon a soul when they genuinely cry out to Him when He deals
with them. That is a key phrase, when they cry out to
God. He begins to work in their life, and that is
the first step from being in the world to stepping into the
kingdom of God.
Repentance is the first step, the first turning to
translation, but He has called us to go on unto perfection.
Preachers who preach to you that you just squeak in are not
doing you justice. The first church was a glorious church.
The Apostles walked with Jesus. Stephen was the first
martyr because of his uncompromising message. He looked
into the heavens, and he saw the Son of man standing at the
right hand of Almighty God. His heart wasn’t earth bound
anymore!
God heareth not sinners. Why do Christians continue to
retain their ability to sin? Some even demand to keep their
ability to sin and stay saved.
Excuses like, Well, I’m not perfect, you know, or
Well, I’m only human, don’t stand before God. The
standard is higher than what is being taught, preached, and
exemplified by most Christians.
PRAYER
2 Corinthians 6:17-18 says, “Wherefore come out from among
them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the
unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father
unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the
Lord Almighty.”
1 Peter 4:18 says, “And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” Children of
God pray for sinners that God would deal with them, so they
can cry out to God with a broken heart, with repentance, and
be saved. If it wasn’t for God sending His Son, man would
have no hope whatsoever!
If we will not repent there is no hope! Repenting before
the Lord, staying until you have prayed through, staying
until the burden is gone, staying until the joy comes, is
absent from much of the church anymore.
In Luke 19:46 Jesus said, “. . . It is written, My house is
the house of prayer. . . .” Many churches have become
houses for entertainment, competition, gossip, worldliness,
and lust. An enemy has entered into the habitation of God.
Where God is supposed to be, the devil has moved in.
Look at the shape of the church in Jesus’ day. The blind
man had to tell the preachers that God heareth not sinners.
They were trying to tell him that Jesus was a Samaritan and
had a devil.
In John 9:29 the Jews said, “We know that God spake unto
Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.”
The blind man replied in Verse 30, “. . . Why herein is a
marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and
yet he hath opened mine eyes.” They thought they had “the
goods”, but Jesus healed the blind man.
We can’t have revival without repentance! We can’t have
safety in America, or in the church, or in your own home,
from cancer, or disease, or attacks, or murder, or
slaughter, or anything else, except there comes a repentance
before God. Then God will hear you and answer.
We must get on our faces until God answers. God says that
He will give you the desire of your heart, but it will be
His desire. Some people won’t come to the Lord, because
they are afraid He is going to do something with them, and
they say, I can’t do that.
That is why it is so great to know that He is going to
change you. He is going to do something supernatural in
you. Then you will love everybody, pray for everybody,
believe Him for anything, and then miracles will happen. It
won’t happen until the hardness of our hearts is broken, and
our priorities are not the things of this world.
Don’t wait until your finances are straight and your body is
well before you seek God! (See Matthew 6:33.)
Isaiah 55:6 says, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found,
call ye upon him while he is near:” That tells me
that He can’t always be found, and He is not always near.
We need to get desperate before God.
MORE
THAN AIR
I heard a story about an old preacher and a young boy who
wanted to be in the ministry. The preacher said, We will
find out if you want to be in the ministry. He said,
All right. How do we do that? The preacher said,
After church we are going to the creek. When they got
to the creek the preacher grabbed him and shoved his head
under the water. He held it there until the boy began to
kick! Bubbles got fewer and fewer, and finally he picked
him up. The boy was coughing and choking, but he turned to
the old preacher and asked him what he was trying to do!
The preacher said, What was the main thing on your mind
all the time you were under that water? The boy said,
I wanted air! The preacher said, When you want
Jesus that bad, you can be a preacher!
FORGIVE
Most people don’t want Jesus as bad as they want their own
way! Some even find scripture to help them have their way.
That is not repentance, nor is it Christianity. We must be
estranged from what we have been. You can’t blame mama,
daddy, grandma, hypocrites, or anybody else. The devil
blames everyone else; he says he is never at fault. That is
what an unrepentant sinner does. They blame everybody
else.
Do you know down in your heart that everything is right
before God? Someone may have had a part in your sin, but
they don’t make you keep the sin. You have to repent, and
you have to forgive. Just open yourself up and let it go.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:15, “But if ye forgive not men their
trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your
trespasses.”
Years ago in my study, I brushed against one of the guards
of an old Florence wood stove. I had it fired up with some
ash wood, and I was in there studying my Bible. My study
used to be an old summer kitchen right next to our 100 year
old house. I can get out there and whatever God does to me
doesn’t bother anybody else in the house.
As I felt the heat of the stove guard, I got to thinking
about the martyrs of the Lord, and about how they were
burned at the stake. I thought about how they turned their
faces to God, and their limbs fell off, and yet they praised
the Lord. Witnesses saw these things. You can read about
it in “The Foxes Book of Martyrs”. There are two very thick
books in fine print. If you read them, you should never
complain again.
We read in the Word of God about how men and women hazarded
their lives for Jesus. They loved not their lives unto
death. Following Jesus was more important to them than
worldly pleasures and their own plans for their lives.
God’s plan is better than ours. We have things we want to
do, places we want to go, and people we want to be with!
Some people want to earn a million dollars, own their own
home, be a scholar, or marry a certain person. However, the
plan of God is glorious, and it’s not one that you would be
bored with or unhappy with.
I thought about those martyrs, and the people who died just
to get the Word of God to us. They were convinced that it
was the truth, and that the truth would make men free. They
had a calling from God, their heavenly Father. You have to
be convinced. You have to be fully persuaded. It isn’t a
whim or an intellectual thing.
Whenever you commit your mind, body, soul, and
spirit to it, you know that you know.
LISTEN
TO GOD AND OBEY HIM
The intellectual Pharisees were arguing. They didn’t
understand how the blind man could be healed. They could
have said that miracles passed away with the prophets, or
that God didn’t do miracles anymore.
The Bible says that the power of God is still operational,
because it says in Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ the same
yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” God still does what
His Word says He will do, and He still has a calling for His
people. It hasn’t changed!
A lady who was going through a divorce came to me for
counseling. I said, Didn’t you ask me this two weeks
ago? She said, Yeah. I said, Ok, so, what
did I tell you then? She repeated it. She knew what to
do. I said, Well, alright, then do it! It was the same
today as it was two weeks ago!
The counsel, the admonition, the warning, the blessing, and
the promises of Almighty God are the same today as they were
two thousand years ago! They are still fresh and available,
because our God is the same God that He was then! Malachi
3:6 says, “For I am the LORD, I change not. . . .”
TURNING
Have you ever been truly sorry for something? Are
you truly sorry for it today? I’m not talking about just
saying, “That is a regrettable incident.” Repentance is not
being sorry only. Repentance is being sorry and doing
something about it. The Lord began to show me that
repentance was a turning. We are going in one direction,
and full repentance is turning a complete 180 degrees.
He showed me that many people are not on a 180, but a 45, or
a 90, or a 70, or a 120 degree turn. He said, “Few have
gone to 180.”
Some have turned and maybe have looked in that direction,
but they haven’t made full repentance. Have you noticed
that you can’t walk backwards but so long? You sure can’t
run the race backwards or in a half turn position. You will
fall down and lose out all together. You have to be fully
turned toward God to run the race and win.
LAY
YOUR LIFE DOWN
We don’t seem to understand the word repentance. It
isn’t confession only. It is getting down and letting
God bruise you and break you to where there is nothing alive
in you to rise up and do it again. If it isn’t broken, you
have strength to rise up and do it again. In John 10:17-18
Jesus said, “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay
down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it
from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it
down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment
have I received of my Father.”
It takes power to lay your life down as surely as it takes
power to raise it up again. You must break the power that
is working in your life so that you will never rise again,
but Jesus Christ will rise up in you. There must be
brokenness of self, crumbling, and destruction. You can’t
serve God and the world.
A double-minded person is unstable in all of his ways. A
double-minded person classifies most Christians. The world
is not double-minded; they serve the devil fully. As a
Christian, you have the mind of Christ and your own mind.
You need to be crucified and let God’s power come upon you
to destroy your old nature that draws you back into sin.
Let the Spirit of God destroy your desire for sin!
If you TURN to the Lord He will give you power to lay your
life down. Jesus didn’t come to send peace in your sin. He
brought the Word, a Sword to sever you, to cut you off from
every entanglement of this world. He wants to cut off every
umbilical cord that you have been linked with from your
birth to this moment so you won’t become re-attached.
DON’T
QUIT
Too many people quit before it is fulfilled. On the cross
Jesus said, “It is finished.” Jesus prayed it
through for you and me. Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was
wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are healed.”
All we have to do is enter into the same door, and meet with
Jesus, and the world will have no more part in our lives.
However, we are in the day of the great falling away and
great delusion.
Psalms 78:30-33 says, “They were not estranged from their
lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths, The
wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them,
and smote down the chosen men of Israel. For all this they
sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their
years in trouble.”
You talk about wasted time! They consumed their days in
vain activities that didn’t profit. That is a tragedy.
Psalms 78:34-35 says, “When he slew them, then they sought
him: and they returned and inquired early after God. And
they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God
their redeemer.” That sounds like revival! Hallelujah!
Psalms 78:36-37 says, “Nevertheless they did flatter him
with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their
tongues. For their heart was not right with him, neither
were they stedfast in his covenant.”
DELIVERANCE
I have seen people get just enough relief to go out and have
strength to sin again! God does not heal you so you can
continue to live in sin. We need revival, but there must be
repentance. We need to get down before the Lord and say,
Lord, have mercy upon me a sinner. Have mercy upon me a
backslider. Have mercy upon me Lord, where I have let the
world in and its priorities.
Mark 4:19 says, “And the cares of this world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things
entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.”
He is talking about Christians, because the world doesn’t
have the Word planted in them.
The unprofitable servant is the same as the lukewarm servant
and has the same destination as the unbeliever. A Christian
can backslide and go to hell. A sinner has to go where the
devil leads him, which is hell. Hypocrites go to hell.
Christianity is not automatic. We have to work out our own
salvation with fear and trembling (see Philippians 2:12).
FOLLOW
JESUS
Follow the Lord Jesus. Read the Bible and pray. Be filled
with the Holy Ghost! Pray in the Spirit after that. We
need to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the
flesh.
God can do anything, and He wants to do it with you and me.
The only way that we can come into the place of power with
God is to repent. You can’t be in two places at once.
We have to come out from the world. We have to come
out from our coldness and indifference.
Commitment is at an all time low, and that makes people
aggravated at one another. Our nation is under attack. Did
anybody notice what happened to the Twin Towers? Nevada and
Florida have had people die from anthrax that was spread
through letters. All they would have to do is throw some of
that into our water supply and hundreds or maybe millions of
people will die.
Some people will not be on the alert, and in a few hours
they will drop dead. Should we not be in prayer? Should we
not be repentant? Learn to depend upon the One who saved
you by His grace, Who shed His blood for you, and Who is
sitting on the right hand of God making intercession for
you.
We have to turn around. Have you ever been truly sorry for
something? Did you quit sinning? You can pray until all
power to lay your life down is given to you; then you can
quit. You do not have to sin. Christians are NOT supposed
to be sinners. God hears people who love Him and obey Him.
If you haven’t arrived into the place of perfection yet, how
can you get God to hear you?
1 John 2:1 says, “My little children, these things write I
unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an
advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”
Ask God to forgive you. If you continually ask Him about
the same thing over, and over, and over, there is dominance
in your life that must be broken. You need to fast, and
pray, and seek God until God answers and removes it!
We can’t get to God without repentance. God’s Word still
simply and powerfully says in Mark 1:15, “. . . repent ye,
